Nlessi is also the fishermen's and artisans' quarter. At dawn, pirogues return from the estuary laden with fresh fish to be sold at the central market. Women prepare smoked fish there using ancestral techniques. The quarter also houses several Afro-Brazilian families whose two-story houses, sometimes dilapidated, bear witness to the past prosperity of coastal trade.
